Lorraine Greaves

greavesDr. Greaves is the Senior Investigator at the British Columbia Centre of Excellence for Women’s Health in Vancouver, BC, a Clinical Professor in the Department of Health Care and Epidemiology, Faculty of Medicine at UBC, and appointments at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto and the Centre for Addictions and Mental Health. Dr. Greaves is the former Executive Director of the British Columbia Centre of Excellence for Women’s Health in Vancouver and former Director of the Centre for Research on Violence Against Women and Children in London, Ontario.

Dr. Greaves has been involved in the addictions field for some time, including community based treatment planning for the Addiction Research Foundation, national and international leadership in women and tobacco issues, and research and policy development in gender, addictions, and tobacco. She wrote thebook Smoke Screen: Women’s Smoking and Social Control (1996) for which she won the 1997 Laura Jamieson Prize, awarded by the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women (CRIAW) for the best non-fiction book. Shehas also written several chapters and articles on addictions issues, such asthe chapter, “History of Women’s Tobacco and Drug Use in Canada” inWomen’s Use of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs, published by the Addiction Research Foundation (1995). With Nancy Poole, Dr. Greaves released Highs and Lows: Canadian Perspectives on Women and Substance Use in 2007, published by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.

Dr. Greaves is interested inapplying a women-centred and sex and gender lens to addictions research on a variety of topics such as; fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) as a women’s health issue, addictions training and treatment, mothering and addictions, integratingnicotine treatment into drug and alcohol programs and research, barriers to prevention and treatment, pregnancy and tobacco use, gender-based analysisof tobacco policy,Aboriginal tobacco use and policy, andthe relationship of violence to substance use. She has released two books on research methods: Designing and Conducting Sex, Gender and Health Research (with John Oliffe) published by SAGE in 2012, and Experience, Research, Social Change: Methods Beyond the Mainstream (with Sandra Kirby and Colleen Reid) in 2006, published by Broadview Press.

Dr. Greaves has served as a leader in the Centres of Excellence for Women’s Health network and has worked withinternational agenciessuch as the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), IARC, International Network of Women Against Tobacco (INWAT) & the World Health Organization (WHO) developing resources for woman and substance use. Over the years she has mentoredundergraduate and graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows. Dr. Greaves is the Lead Investigator on the CIHR funded Strategic Research Training program in Gender, Women and Addiction (IMPART).
